  2016 BC Purple Martin Breeding Season

  • The first reported Purple Martins arrived at the Ladysmith Maritime Society colony site on March 28!!
  • They have continued to arrive over the last few days at more sites including  Royal Roads University (Victoria area), Protection Island (Nanaimo area) and Royston (Comox area).
  • And, no this isn't an April Fool's Day joke!! They really are here.
  • A week of sunny warm weather and southerly weather patterns along the west coast have helped the first few Purple Martins on their migration north.
                     2015 BC Purple Martin Breeding Season Summary (Aug 19/15)
  • BC Purple Martin Recovery Program sets new records again this year!
  • After a summer of very warm weather and a plentiful supply of flying insects, a total of 1100 pairs successfuly raised ~4000 young. This is the highest number of pairs and young recorded in the 30-year history of the nest box recovery program.
  • With the early nesting season this summer, nestling banding was completed by early August and 2800 young were banded.
  • A total of 90 colony sites (up from 80 last year) were occupied this year and martins continued to nest at freshwater sites, in Bamfield and north of Campbell River.
  • Many nestlings were learning to fly by mid - late July and there was a lot of bird activity at the active colonies.
  • By the end of July and early August, many Purple Martins had started their fall migration to South America.
