2010 BC Purple Martin Breeding Season Draws to a Close

(Aug 19/10)
  • Many martins now migrating South to winter in South America
  • Banding completed mid August and 2000+ nestlings banded in total.
  • Open House on July 18 was a great success! Many people enjoyed both the displays and banding demonstrations. The purple milkshakes were delicious on a very hot day. Come and join us next year!
  • 10 more geolocators applied to adult birds at Ladysmith colony mid July.
  • Nestling banding expected to start mid July.
  • Martin eggs hatching at some colonies in early July.
  • One geolocator retreived on June 14 and migration data being analyzed
  • Two geolocators sighted at the French Creek colony in mid June.
  • First subadult martins seen on May 17 at Newcastle Island.
  • First adult martins observed on April 10 and 11 at Ladysmith Maritime Society marina and several other sites on Vancouver Island.
