            Purple Martin 2011 Summary
    • Recovery Program sets new records in 2011!!!
    • A total of 730 pairs successfully raised over 2300 nestlings this year. This is the highest number of pairs and young documented in the 15-year history of the monitoring program.
    • 1900 nestlings were banded with a gold numbered band on the left leg and a US Fish and Wildlife silver band on the right.
    • 50 nest box sites were active in 2011.
    • Martins are now in SE Brazil. Now their way south they had a brief stopover in the SW USA and will spend the winter in SE Brazil, a 11,000 km trip one-way.
    • Another population increase is expected next year. We should achieve our short term goal of 800 pairs by 2012.
