2010 BC Purple Martin Breeding Season Draws to a Close
(Aug 19/10)
- Many martins now migrating South to winter in South America
- Banding completed mid August and 2000+ nestlings banded in total.
- Open House on July 18 was a great success! Many people enjoyed both
the displays and banding demonstrations. The purple milkshakes were
delicious on a very hot day. Come and join us next year!
- 10 more geolocators applied to adult birds at Ladysmith colony mid July.
- Nestling banding expected to start mid July.
- Martin eggs hatching at some colonies in early July.
- One geolocator retreived on June 14 and migration data being analyzed
- Two geolocators sighted at the French Creek colony in mid June.
- First subadult martins seen on May 17 at Newcastle Island.
- First adult martins observed on April 10 and 11 at Ladysmith Maritime Society marina and several other sites on Vancouver Island.
